Dr. David WoodburyAthens, GA. St. Mary’s Medical Group is proud to announce that David Woodbury, MD, FAAOS, is joining St. Mary’s Orthopedic Specialists effective March 16, 2026.  Dr. Woodbury is an Orthopedic sports surgeon and has more than 26 years of experience in both military and private practice. He comes to St. Mary’s from Longstreet Clinic in Gainesville, Ga., where he has practiced Orthopedic sports medicine and adult reconstruction since 2021.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Massachusetts and went on to earn his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. His honors there included the Merck Manual Award for outstanding performance on clinical rotations, and he was awarded a United States Navy Health Professions Scholarship.

Prior to serving on active duty, he completed his internship and residency training at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY.  He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1999-2005, during which time he received the Navy Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. His naval appointments included practice at the U.S. Naval hospitals in Pensacola, Fla., and Beaufort, SC, where he served as Chief of Orthopedics.  Thereafter, he was President and CEO of Lakeside Orthopaedic Center in Manning, SC, from 2005-2014, and joined McLeod Orthopedics in Florence, SC, in 2014 before moving his practice to Gainesville in 2021.

Dr. Woodbury is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in both Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine. He is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His past community activities have included on-field/sideline coverage for the Florence school district, assistant coaching for youth softball, baseball, and soccer teams, and he was an Assistant Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America. In 2012 he joined Community Bible Church of Beaufort on a mission trip to Ukraine.

He and his wife of 36 years, Tracy Ann, actively farm beef cattle regeneratively at their farm in Clermont, Ga. They have three adult children. His other personal interests include mountain biking, camping, and hunting.

St. Mary’s Orthopedic Specialists (SMOS) is located in The Exchange office park at 2470 Daniells Bridge Road, Building 300. Dr. Woodbury and Dr. Randy Lavender, Jr., are now accepting new patients.
